Best practices
Wash in cold/cool/30° water
Heat damages the elasticity and performance of Spandex and elastane. Most detergents work in cool water.
Turn your clothes inside out
Reduces the exposure of your garments to heavy abrasion from other items in the cycle
Wash with similar fabrics
Reduces the exposure of your garments to heavy and high lint fabrics that can damage your activewear
Avoid softeners
Softeners add a wax-like layer to your garments that reduces a fabrics's sweat-wicking ability and attracts bacteria
Avoid heavy detergents
Sensitive detergents are preferred as they will reduce risk of enzymes breaking down your garments
Never tumble dry
The high heat of tumble dryers can damage the spandex and elastane within the fabrics. Drying cupboards are usually ok to use if placed on a lower heat.
Line dry at room temperature is best
Again, the less exposure to heat the better
Avoid excessive and continuous friction
Excessive rubbing on rough surfaces (such as rough gym floors, velcro, backpacks etc.) is equivalent to sand papering your garments. Try to avoid exposing your garments to excessive friction to reduce the risk of pilling and surface damage.
